About Mat Based Pilates
Pilates was developed by German born Joseph Pilates. it is believed that he enjoyed boxing, gymnastics, body building and yoga. Furthermore, he was influenced by the movements of animals, particularly cats and he developed a unique exercise programme consisting of 34 exercises initially called Contrology. Mat based Pilates is accessible to all ages regardless of ability and levels of fitness and focuses on whole body movement as opposed to individual muscles..
Pilates helps you gain confidence and with regular practice, it will develop strength, balance, self awareness and stamina. It can help release tension and improve the overall sense of well being. Many healthcare professionals including GPs are increasingly advising their patients to try Pilates for rehabilitation after injury, illness and for general well being. It is a safe and low impact exercise where all you need is a little space and a mat!
